At the b eginning of 2259, C aptain John Sheridan replac es Sincl air as the mili tary governor o f the statio n. He and the command st aff learn that the de ath of P resident Santiago was actually an assas sination ma sterminded by Vice President Cla rk (who ass umed th e Presi dency up on Santiago& ;#39;s de ath). A confli ct develops b etween the Bab ylon 5 c ommand staff and the Psi Corps, a n increas ingly autocrat ic organi zation which oversees and controls the lives of human telep aths. Com mander Iv anova, the sec ond-in-command of the sta tion, is secre tly a latent t elepath who h as illicitly a voided registering wit h the Psi Corps. The Shadows, a n ancient a nd extremely powerfu l race who have rec ently em erged from hibernatio n, are revealed to be the cau se of a variety o f mysterio us and disturbi ng events, including the attack on the Nar n outpost at the end o f 2258. Centau ri Ambassad or Lond o Mollari unkn owingly e nlists th eir aid throug h his a ssociat ion with the mysteri ous Mr. Mor den in the o ngoing co nflict with the Narn . A number of c onspira tors, includ ing Londo M ollari and Refa, take control of the Centa uri government by assassi nating th eir opponents a nd placing t he late empe ror&# 39;s unst able neph ew on t he throne. T heir fir st act is to start open a ggression ag ainst the N arn. After a fu ll-scale wa r breaks out, the Centauri e ventually c onquer Narn in a brutal attack involvi ng mass dri vers, o utlawed w eapons of mass destru ction. Towa rds the end o f the year, t he Clark adm inistration b egins to show increa singly totalita rian characteri stics, c lamping down on dissent and restricting fre edom of spe ech. The Vorlons a re reveal ed to be the basis of legen ds about ange ls on vario us worlds, inc luding Earth , and are th e ancie nt enemie s of the Shad ows.
