Wealthy Roll o Tread way (Buster Keaton) sud denly de cides to p ropose to his n eighbor across the stree t, Bets y O&#39 ;Brien (Kat hryn McGuire), and sends hi s serva nt to book pa ssage for a hon eymoon se a cruise t o Honolulu. W hen Betsy rejec ts his sudden offer h owever, he decides to go on the trip anyway, boardin g without dela y that night . Because th e pier numb er is part ially covere d, he e nds up on the wrong shi p, the Navigator, w hich Bet sy' s rich f ather (Frederic k Vroom) has just sol d to a smal l country at war. Agents fo r the othe r small n ation in t he conflict dec ide to set th e ship adrift that s ame night. When Betsy& #39;s fat her checks up on th e ship, h e is captu red and tied up by the sabote urs. Betsy hear s his cry for hel p and board s the ship to look for h im, jus t before it i s cut lo ose. The Navi gator d rifts out i nto the Pacific Ocean. T he two unwit ting pass engers eventu ally fin d each other. At first, they have gr eat dif ficulty lo oking a fter themselves , but adapt a fter a few weeks. At one point, they sight a na vy ship and ho ist a brightly- colored fla g, not real izing it signals that the ship is un der quaran tine. As a resu lt, th e other ve ssel tu rns away. F inally, the s hip grounds itself near an inhabite d tropica l island and sp rings a leak. While Rollo d ons a deep sea diving suit and su bmerges to patch the hole, the black native s canoe out and take Bets y captive. W hen Roll o emerges fr om the ocean, t he natives a re scared off , enabling h im to rescue Be tsy and take h er back to the ship. The nati ves return and try to board the shi p. After a fierce str uggle, Rollo and Bet sy try to escap e in a small dinghy. It starts to sink, and the natives swiftly overta ke them in their can oes.
